BIRBA: A Library for the elementary school children of Assisi.

What BiRBA does

We run

the library and open it for lending to our little readers and their teachers every Saturday morning (many Italian schools are still open on Saturdays!) from 9:30 to 12:30.

We read

stories out loud, perform them, and talk about them  to a different class each week.

We also

read and perform stories for our little listeners in English.

We organise

parties with games and workshops with books at their center. Our little readers are enthusiastic about these events and enjoy them and this in turns helps them to discover the delight of reading.

We collaborate

with teachers to help them  (when requested!) with particular school projects  (on Water, Recycling, Diet) making relevant library materials available to them.

We are committed

as an association to acquiring the latest titles in a wide range of fields, both fiction and non-fiction, and to giving  readings (sometimes fiction, sometimes non-fiction) in support of  these school projects.

We also involve

grandparents in our readings and performances of stories — as well as parents, older  brothers and sisters, and other young adults from the area;

We offer

courses to parents, grandparents, teachers (and anyone else who is interested!) in storytelling and narration techniques and organise periodic meetings with experts in the sector of children’s literature and the most up-to-date bibliography for children.

We also

happy to offer consulting services and help other parents all over Italy interested in creating libraries both for little children and for boys and girls.
